Ginger Bread Recipe

Ingredients : |
120 g
butter or margarine
120 ml
treacle or molasses
225 g
light brown sugar
120 ml hot
water
300 g
whole wheat flour
10 ml
baking powder
pinch salt
10 ml
fresh ginger, peeled and grated
5 ml
grated nutmeg
1 egg,
beaten |
Method :
- Melt the butter in a heavy based pan
and stir in the molasses and sugar.
- Heat gently to dissolve molasses and
sugar.
- Pour in the hot water, mix well and
set the mixture aside.
- Sift the flour with the baking powder
and salt into a large bowl.
- Return the bran from the flour to the
bowl.
- Make a well in the center and add the
nutmeg, ginger and beaten egg.
- Pour in the molasses liquid and begin
beating with a wooden spoon, gradually drawing in the flour from the
outside.
- Alternatively, use an electric mixer,
but be careful not to over mix.
- Line a shallow round or square pan
with lightly greased paper.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 1 hour,
or until a skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Serve with whipped or sour cream, or
slice and spread with butter.
